Very nice! Wonderfully out-of-focus background. The soft light works very well and the pose is nicely balanced. The colors are nicely complementary. I would like to see a bit more of her face (hair pulled somewhat to the right).

I think that the image would be stronger if you had had a shallower depth of field. I also think that some burning on the background would make the model a stronger focal part of the image.

The only other area i see where a strength could be added would be to have more of the models face visible ( but there may well be reasons for the covering as it is )

Colin, After reading your comments, on my own and others work, I looked to see your photos and see that you have posted no pictures whatsoever on Photo.net. Even though showing none of your own work you come across with the language of an expert. Alas you are a pseudo expert. Those who cannot do, become critics! I consider this in the poorest taste. Put up or shut up, Colin!

I have to defend Colin here. Assuming you are correct in believing that Colin isn't a photographer himself (it could just be that he doesn't post on PNet) it's a logical fallacy that one has to be a practitioner of something in order to intelligently comment on it. You don't have to be a football player to understand the sport; you don't have to be a vintner to be a wine connoisseur; you don't have to be a playwright to distinguish between "Hamlet" and "101 Dalmatians." Most importantly to this discussion, you can have an educated eye without ever having held a camera to it. I think the proper response to Colin would be, "I may disagree with you, but I thank you for taking the time out of your life to actually comment on my image and to include specifics."

Oh, and while you're at it, do check out Colin's home page. Turns out my guess in the previous paragraph was correct.

Hello Jerry

Thank you for your email.

I will admit to not being familiar with every rule and term of service that as photo.net user i initially agreed to. So there may well be something requesting those who choose to write a critique on images that were submitted for critique to have an active image gallery on the site themselves.

If this is the case then clearly i am out of order in writing any critique, so i offer an apology to you.

Having just had a quick look at the info on the critique page it seems on the surface that not to be the case.

I have in the past had multiple images on photo.net and the major reason i removed them was simply because i got little feedback and only ratings.

I wonder if when writing the critique on your image, had i said something like, oh nice dof and i really love the lighting, would you have gone to see my photo.net gallery.

I wonder also if the critique i wrote has no value at all and gives you nothing to think about when you look at the image, if i had photos posted on photo.net would my critique have some or more value.

I would like to think that an experienced photographer like yourself could see some value in my critique simply on what it says alone.

If you really feel the need to see my style/level of photography then it doesnt take much work to find images online.

Heres a link to a small sample http://www.colindoust.net

All the best Jerry sorry to have bothered you.

Regards

Colin

Mr. Alan Latham asked my permission to copy this photograph and give his own interpretation.  I gave my permission and this is what he produced.
