It's a very magnetic image. I agree with Iftikhar that tiny bit more contrast might help rivet the viewer's eyes onto the subject's eyes - but you sure don't want to blow out the shot's delicate highlights and lose detail in the hair or on the skin.

Because the eyes aren't positioned to directly catch and reflect a spark of light, that might be where I'd VERY carefully work a bit with a very subtle change in localized contrast. But it's such a fine line to walk, there. The composition, the moment, the well controlled DoF - it's all really well put together, and I'm sure a delight for those that know her. Very nice!

Dick... Ifti and Matt have covered the technical. What I like about this is the warm, comfortable look and smile. Young Brinley is growing fast and tolerates Dad's shutter well... Good shot... Mike

Edit: Oops, somewhere my aged memory thought this a daughter... Mike

Thank you very much, Ifti, Matt and Mike! This is my wife's niece's daughter who was visiting us this summer at Squaw Lake. She is a natural subject(and knows it :-)....in a good way!).

Ifti and Matt, I added some contrast to this and did some minor adjustment of exposure, luminance levels and shadow in Aperture 2.1.3. The image on my iMac monitor is superior to what I see on PC laptop. This is a constant problem. I posted the image in my Portraits portfolio as Brinley 2. What do you think?

Matt, you are correct about this being a very touchy situation. A slight sparkle of light in her eyes would have been great. But this was a completely candid shot, sitting by the lake in natural light.

I really appreciate the helpful comments!

Your second version is indeed a bit more lively - but that's Subtle (with a capital S!). That's definitely hair splitting - like you say, this was a candid shot in light as the light happened. And it's a real success. Your wife's niece's daughter (did I get that right?) will always be glad you got this one.

Matt, thank you for taking a look! I think I'll put up the second version on the Wednesday thread...with kudos to you and Ifti!

Thank you also, William!

Best regards,

Dick
