Square, Victoria B.C.

robertbrown

Shot late morning in renovated mall in Victoria BC. Used an orange filter, should have had a tripod. Excuse the crappy scan. Developed and printed in my home darkroom. Contrast readjusted in photoshop to match print.

Overall, this is a nice shot. You could easily improve the photo by correcting the slight skewedness of the horizon to the left (the tilted park benches and the horizontal beams). The one thing the photo lacks, IMHO, is a point of focus. I look at the people, one of whom is looking left, and my eye is drawn out of the picture.

I appreciate the shot. However, just in my opinion, it would be a little better by cutting the "white" part at the bottom, in order to point a bit more the attention on people.

I had a look at your other folders, and it's pretty clear that you take photography seriously. all of your work is quite strong. the landscapes are amazing. Print wise, this is pretty bang-on, but I find the subject matter falls a bit flat for me. There's not much of a story or hook to make me interested. I hope that doesn't sound too harsh. But i guess this is the place to be honest. Looking at it longer, I can see that you put thought into it, but it doesn't grab me like your other photographs.

Hello Robert :)

Here is my honest opinion. My first reaction when I saw this photo was "uninteresting subject". Then, after viewing your other photos (which I thought were very impressive) I thought that this is one of your lesser photos in your portfolio.

I understand that it maybe due to the quality of scanner. However, the composition or the lighting is not interesting.

By the way, I've enjoyed most of your infrared photos. Very nice!

Thanks for all of the comments. When I took this, I thought it was going to turn out better than the final result. The lighting conditions were not good, lots of bright sun and heavy shadows--more than the film could handle. Thus, the print lacks punch. . . mixed with so-so and not particularly clear-cut subject matter . . . This one's not destined to hang on a wall!

I have to agree with the previous posters. This photo is not representative of your usual work. I find the burned out parts of the photo to be unappealing, in addition to which there is no specific part of the photo that really grabs me. Considering what was there, it seems an okay photo, I just don't see anything about the scene to be truly interesting.

I find the background too disturbing. It could have been blurred a bit more, or underexposed. The wheel on the left is cut and draws the attention.
