Guest Guest Posted August 27, 2009 Vladimir, This would work nicely as a beauty or fashion shot, but it is in the portrait category. I will critique it as a portrait. Wendy is a very pretty girl. She has very good skin tone and your butterfly (Hollywood) lighting is nicely done. She has applied her make-up very well. Great specular highlights on her lips. You have focused very well on her eyes. The background is nicely neutral. Wendy is well separated from the background. The kicker on her hair and back gives a nice highlight to her shadowed side. The interesting effect with her "scarf" works well as leading lines to her face. If not making eye contact with the camera (viewer), the eyes should follow the line of the nose -- good job. Your subject should have more room in front of her than behind. This allows her to be facing into the picture, not out of it. You want to compositionally balance the left and right sides of the photograph. The compositional "rule" for this suggests that you position the tip of the subject's nose in the vertical center of the photograph. Do not have your subject wear bright clothing. Her bright blue "scarf" draws the viewer's attention away from her face. The burst of white (or light blue) behind her draws attention away from her face. Be careful of her pose. Her shoulders look hunched over which makes her look awkward and off balance. Your name is not part of the photograph. It belongs on the mat. Nice shot, Mark Link to comment
jerrymat 5 Posted August 28, 2009 Vladimir, I would suggest that you ignore Mark Chartrand and his less than professional critiques. Take a look at his site and you will find he has submitted no photographs what-so-ever for us to look at. His biography says he has four Master's degrees from as many institutions. He is obviously a professional student rather than someone who has learned anything. I strongly suggest he is one who cannot take a good photograph so he is hiding behind the mask of the critic. He loves to say something like "you have submitted this in the category of portrait" and go on to suggest another category (which may not exist at P.N.) This strongly suggests he does not know what he is talking about. Regards, Jerry Link to comment
