The library vault

The library vaults of the Masjid-i-Jami were probably built

between 1121 and 1175 (A.H. 515-571) in Seljuq times. The library

vaults are located southeast of the sanctuary ivan. The small units of

brick allow great flexibility in design. An important attribute of

brick as a medium is that it permits variety within a unified whole.

With it the artist could create harmonious areas of vast portions

(such as these halls in the Masjid-i-Jami), each segment of which

still maintained its particular individuality.
