Fire Above the Cordillera Negra

harrylichtman

A tarn near our Laguna Collicocha tent site provided the perfect reflecting pool as the sun sank below the Cordillera Negra in Peru's Cordillera Blanca. I had originally hoped to photograph alpenglow above the Santa Cruz massif to the east, but cloud cover obscured the peaks. I raced back toward the west where compositions were found to compliment the lighting conditions. 3 stop grad. ND filter, hard edge was used to balance the brightness of the scene. This tarn sat upon a plateau at 15,184 ft.

A colorful sky above Peru's Cordellera Negra, reflected in an alpine

tarn. While it appears to be flat, the elevation is about 15,345 ft. and a

lon and steep uphill climb to this point. A huge valley separates the

Codillera Negra (Black Range) with the area that most of my trekking

was in- Codillera Blanca - (White Range). COmments welcome.

Nice shot. and good control of the wide dynamic range. Looks like you were able to take a single shot and that is good - I might have been tempted to go with a 5 shot auto bracket on my D300 - may have given some more color to the reflection in the water when processed. If this is close to what you saw, then it was a good decision to stick with the single shot.

Thanks for the comments. Tony- I had taken 2 shots, one for highlights and one for shadows, figuring I would need to combine them for the final image. After looking at the 2 images, I found that I liked the image I had taken for the highlights and was hable to pull out shadow detail enough for my taste. I hesitate to add too much color to the reflection for fear it might approach a bit unrealistic. Thanks again for your thoughts.
