jamesberg 0 Posted August 5, 2009 She is stunning. I'd say just give the photo a slight bump in saturation and this portrait will look fantastic!! Link to comment

Guest Guest Posted August 6, 2009 John, She is a very pretty girl. You have focused well on her eyes. Her make-up is well applied, but I would like to see a bit more eye liner under her eyes to help highlight her eyes. I like her eye contact with the camera (viewer), but I am not really sure what she is communicating to me. It looks like she may be questioning something, but I don't know what. The overall tones of the picture seem a little pastel looking. Maybe there is a lack of saturation (just a little). Your subject should have more room in front of her than behind. This allows her to be facing into the picture, not out of it. You want to compositionally balance the left and right sides of the photograph. The compositional "rule" for this suggests that you position the tip of the subject's nose in the vertical center of the photograph. You do not want to have your subject turned 90 degrees to the camera. This makes the head look unsupported. It usually looks best to angle your subject somewhere around 45 degrees. She is turned so far from the camera that she has to turn her head and her eyes a lot to be able to make eye contact with the camera. This forces her to have the whites of her eyes showing on only one side of her eyes. It looks better to have the whites of the eyes showing on both sides of the irises. The background is somewhat out of focus, but it is a hodgepodge of lines, shapes and light and dark shades. This draws the viewer's attention away from her face. Did you notice that the background is at an angle? This is very distracting and does nothing good for your photograph. You could make the argument that you intend to make the viewer uneasy. But why? Her dress is a very pretty "Easter egg" print, but it is a bit distracting to the viewer. A plain color would work better. You don't want anything to take away from her face. There are wrinkles in her top. Her sleeve should be pulled down to smooth it out. Her hair doesn't look wind blown. It just looks disheveled. It should be brushed. I would soften her face a little to smooth out her complexion. Nice shot, Mark Link to comment
John Peri 1,029 Posted August 6, 2009 What an interesting comment Mark, thank you, but possibly not worthy of a snapshot such as this taken during a walk up the mountain. I should have specified that earlier possibly, I'm on vacation without a computer and I am just posting bits and pieces. However, all your remarks are very pertinent and instructive to read, thank you, and particularly so for the trouble taken. Link to comment
amalsircar 2 Posted August 6, 2009 John, I like the portrait, as it is. I agree with Mark. Something different from you. There could have been a little more space in front of her. Enjoy a nice vacation, dear friend. Link to comment
