My dog Rain on one of her namesake mornings. It was drizzling, foggy,

and gloomy - and I was thinking black and white when composing. I

gave the photo a film grain texture, with low contrast. This is a

departture from my usual processing treatments, and I would be

interested in your thoughts.

Thanks, David

David, I love the sense of prominence you give your dogs in your images. Rain is patiently standing by. I like this image because it is somber and moody, and dramatically interesting.

David... Except for the slightly modern interior in the canoe, this is a timeless classic... very well done... Mike

I very much appreciate all of your comments - it justifies my thinking on this one greatly. Mike, the canoe has all wood trim - but perhaps you're referring to the sliding bow seat. Your point is well taken though.

This shot did receive a couple of very low anon. ratings, (a "3" for aesthetics?) - which I shouldn't let bother me, but if sincere I do wish they would explain why. I tried something new (for me) here - and if the processing, composition, or subject matter is below average for them - would it not be helpful to elaborate?

Very nice composition with matching B&W tones. I like the photo and maybe even more as the canoe training is ongoing thing here with my dog as well.

You have equipped your canoe with seat rails for paddling ergonomics? (I use special shaped paddle, which requires only bit swirl during the "draw" in order to avoid the side transition). Seems that you are preparing for the hunting season:)

The photo gives also message that everything is ready:) BR Hannu

Thank you very much Hannu and Jill.

Hannu - the sliding bow seat in the forward position allows smaller, lighter paddlers to reach the water more easily with their paddle, and also allows the canoe to be trimmed level, (by moving the weight forward). Good luck with your training! Post a picture if you read this.

David for the information. As Tapsu is only 2 years old he is still in training in all fronts:) Getting used to the canoe (16kg weight for lifting the transport) and getting in and out to the land has taken few days. Getting into the water and up will be the next step in our training program and avoiding mishaps in this.

The cam weight is also in minimum (photo taken with ixus 700 in a waterproof coverbag). I have developed a cushioned net for the dog to climb up to the canoe after the fetch but that manouver needs still some training from both of us:) Will have to include some pics from that too...;) BR Hannu

Thanks for sharing Hannu - Tapsu's a beautiful dog! Do you hunt with him? Your training goals sound like you intend to hunt ducks or similar.

I hunt mostly upland game such as grouse and pheasants. The dogs get to ride in the canoe mostly on fishing or camping trips.

Well, if the genes could decide we would hunt..and Tapsu would love it:) I do not hunt myself (yet;) so much-however, for race breeding certificate the training is necessary- so we intend to follow through the program. Some of my friends are keen on hunting ducks so hopefully He is able to do some real fetching already this Autumn. BR Hannu

David,

This is really beautiful; very moody and Rain looks like such a beautiful and faithful companion! I don't know anything about modern canoes but if it is the interior that gives it away, is it possible to darken the interior of the boat so it is not noticeable? I love this image, as I love all your dogs. Very well done. :)

Hannu - Good luck with training Tapsu - and thanks for sharing the story.

Trisha - Thank you very much for your support on this photo and on my gallery in general. We have a shared love for animals and a similar aesthetic I think.

David,

I looked at your portfolio for the first time today. What fine work you have here!

This portrait is the one that I had to make a comment on first. It stood out in the fine collection.

Is it the mood, the grain, B&W, the foggy background, the serious stare of Rain or all of the above?

Superb!

Hello Antoni, and thanks for stoppping by. I appreciate it greatly, and glad you found this picture to be worthy of such kind comments. I still think your Uncle w/ Niece shot is one of the finest family portraits I've seen here on PN.

Best wishes, David
