You have done a good job on the color, lighting and exposure/tonality in both cropped and this uncropped version. However the two tell slightly different stories. In this one the space to the left is a kind of dynamic space that sets up a kind of tension between the model and the side space, which has faint texture showing. If you had made this space black (without texture) it would not do the same thing. The cropped version is more a portrait and the uncropped one more a picture of a woman suggesting to the viewer that there is room in her life for that viewer. the uncropped one is invitational - "come join me" in feeling. The fact that she so makes eye contact with the camera (viewer) implies intimacy and the space suggests it is a possibility. In a way, because she does not take all space of the frame, it says "there is room for you."

In the end, you have to decide the "story" you want to tell.

I would say that the majority of negative-space-to-the-side of a horizontal framed portrait do not work well - yours does. Usually I find myself telling people that one should use a vertical format for portraits to avoid wasting space. This seems to be the example that beats the rule! After looking for a long time I think I would say that she should send the cropped one as a portrait to her parents and the uncropped one to her lover.

Regards,

Jerry

i unequivocally prefer this image to the cropped version: in that the background serves no purpose beyond distraction but in this uncropped version it plays a pleasing compositional role so eloquently expounded upon by Jerry... i like this the best of the set of four
