Keeler was once a thriving little town. It sat on the shore of Owens

Lake in the Owens Valley. Then Los Angeles took the water feeding the

lake, and the lake and town were doomed. Today the lake is dry.

Living in the San Joaquin Valley of California, as I do, it does have great meaning, as this area is basically a dessert that most of its inhabitants don't seem to realize. Someday, we may all have pools like this.

this is in a way a surprising photo. In the smaller form it looks OK, but nothing special, but when viwed larger, it's almost a pretty picture. Are you getting soft or what? What really helps it is the great sky and the BG mountains. All the components fit together well. I like it a lot. BTW, I hope our Toronto swimming pools won't look like this due to the long strike by City of Toronto workers - it's been 30 days and still no end in sight. Hey, you should have filled it with V8 - that would be a photo! Cheers, Micheal

Dave, what a tragedy? A moving documentary image, beautifully composed, with touch of colors. I agree with Jeff. Amen! Dave, I presume that this image is for your

"THAT WHICH IS NO MORE" folder?

I don't think there will be any coming back here, but maybe filling the pool with V8 would bring tourists and revive the local economy.

Rain they don't get much of and since Los Angeles took the water that filled the lake, I don't think rain will help much. When one sees these spaces of human disaster, it is a bit sobering. Steamships once plied the lake carrying silver from the mines in the hills to Los Angeles, and bringing back supplies for the mines in the hills and the citizens of Keeler and other nearby towns. It's all gone now. But do you hear the laughter of the children playing in and around the pool in the hot sun?

Thanks for your view. I reckon you have provided the answer of what folder to put this in for me. Thank you.

David,

i recently returned from a road trip to South Dakota. i passed mile after mile of corn fields. although not the obvious disaster of total destruction you see here, i couldn't help but think about what we are doing to our country. we humans tend to think that we can control the natural world with no repercussions. of course, there are consequences. your image nails it home.

I think this is just a great picture, any way you want to look at it. The one question I have is about the sky, it seems almost overwhelming as if it belongs to a completely different picture. I notice the mountains have a blue cast that matches the sky. Is this a natural hue due to atmospheric distance or did you adjust for a strongly contrasting sky?

A superb imagethat complements the beach view I previously commented...ghost town and abandonned places...America can be such a cruel/crude country when things are going down (at least seen from here)...

Couldn't agree with you more. Sometimes I think the human species is no better off than a herd of deer, grazing contentedly without any thought to the fact that when the pasture is eaten up they will starve. We supposedly are smart enough figure it out, but I'm thinking it's just not happening. I'm worried.

I might have cranked up the blue slider on hue and saturation a bit too much. I do think there is a haze because of the distance. Not sure. Thanks

I know you do not like to get drawn into criticism of our country and remain quite neutral, but your description of cruel and crude is apt. It is a land of harsh realities that IMHO could use a bit of old school European manner.

A nice find, and right there in your own back yard. I'll keep this place in mind for my retirement travels. A great shot!
