Wonderful and striking patterns, nicely captured with the extended DOF. I'd consider (and hope others will offer an opinion) about including only the background water or including only about 10% of the existing sky in the frame. The background gives context and depth, but the amount showing and its brightness takes the eye away from the lower portion of the image. Reducing the background would lessen this effect but still preserve the contributions it makes to the image.

Hi Stephen

Thanks for your input - you are right. Cropping the top horizon bright part would emphasize the pattern even more so. Yet, I rarely do pure nature abstracts. Somehow I prefer to show the context of my subject. In this image for instance I am willing to "loose" some aesthetics in favour of showing, that this mudcracks are part of a beach.

Regards, Mark

As a biologist, I usually like context too. I just wonder if it's possible to have your cake and eat it too -- context as well as enhanced aesthetics (although I have to say that enhanced aesthetics is very subjective, and some might not agree with my sense of enhanced aesthetics). As I write this, I've scrolled the image up so that only about 1/3 is showing; now that's a real abstract!

Hi Mark, I am not surprised that Stephen Penland has already visited this photo and left a comment. Perhaps as a compromise you could try to darken the sky or do something to reduce its distracting qualities. I agree that it gives an important perspective of depth to your composition. I can also suggest slightly less sharpening or postprocessing to reduce the light edges of the cracks, if you can see what I am saying? Cheers!
