I think that this is a great capture of moment.. The shot speaks for it self.. Your treatment of it just adds to the feeling... Great work...

Jill - thanks very much for your kind words and generous rating - it is appreciated. It was taken yesterday in downtown Montreal on some church steps where there was a free BBQ.

Tony, This is an interesting creation...I think the post processing technique adds a lot of character to an already powerful image...what do you call this technique? I'd like to read up on this for future reference. Your treatment of this image really enhances the story being told here...you can almost feel the depravity and despair. To me the message is that this dude represents an invisible minority in our country...the forgotten derelicts...the way the bystanders are turned away really reinforces this for me. Nicely captured.

I hope you don't stay away from PN to long...but I understand your delimma...I must admit that I spend way more time here than I should. Thanks also for stopping by and for your kind words regarding my "Livee in Tones" portrait...I really appreciate it. Jeff.

Wow, Ton...you know Im a huge fan of this process, and you did a superb job on this one. Not only the p/p work, but the shot itself is original and outstanding. Thanks. Well done, my friend. Regards, Lawrence.

Thanks for your response - you are very observant with excellent writings skills - something I am trying to improve. In addition to the things I also wanted to line up as much of those elements in a diagonal position going from the bottom right to the top left. Using my new toy the 10-20mm wide angle Sigma, I also wanted to balance the red back pack with the red shirt. - It's all Photoshop and lots of experimentation.

Your very generous rating is appreciated. Thanks for stopping by. I am sure he is 'in need' but not sure I believed his story. In any event I wanted photos and he wanted money. I supplied money and I did not want him to pose but just 'do his thing' and I would take a few images.

Very well done creation Tony. A great deal of attention to detail, color and light....excellent....it's unfortunate there are those 'if for whatever reason' end up in this dilema.......not that I condone it.....sometimes just feel there are those with their own private 'demons' perhaps in their past or present.....and they are not equipped with the 'strength of character' to 'deal'.....and resort to this (and many other) forms of escape. When I was a little girl.....we lived 'downtown Oshawa', and there was an abandoned 'Chinese Laundry'.....a lot of 'drunks' bunked there.......one is particular who used to give me the 'willies'....was standing right around a corner I had to turn everyday.......he was so tall to me then....and as I turned the corner, he put his large hand on my head.....and put his wrinkeled, twisted face close to mine....and shook his finger at me and mumbled with his 'foul' breath.......I can still 'feel' it on my face.....

to this day I do not know what he said....but he terrified me as a child.....sometimes he'd be waiting in the 'stairwell' of our apartment (flat) when I was returning home from school....and I could not get 'home' because he would be there.....if I was lucky....he'd be asleep, and I could sneak by him......in my prayers at night I would sometimes mention "Harrison' the old 'drunk'....and ask if God could find him a new home....that was warm.....or make him better.........I hadn't thought of him for a long time.....thankyou for sharing this image.....and reminding me how fortunate I am...sincerely, Gail

A great depiction of a troubled man. It is interesting to me that he is somewhat oblivious to those around him. Well except you of course. The treament is wonderful and enhances this scene. How often do we ignore this kind of scene. Unfortunate but true, but you cannot help those who choose not to help themselves. Wonderful street shot! Take care, Leslie

Thanks - I am convinced that you could write and make some good money. You offer very interesting and personal aspects about yourself which relates to the image. Thanks and hope that your good wishes for "Harrison" have materialized.

Tony, Thanks for the clarifying details...I've been shopping around for a ultra-wide angle lense and I'm curious to know how you like the Sigma you mentioned in your reply?? Regards. Jeff.

I like my sigma 10-20mm very much and it is becoming my 'standard' lens. I do hear that sigma is coming out with a new improved one in the 'near future'. The tokina 11-16 is getting very good views and they say (ken Rockwell and others) it is better than the sigma 10-20 and even better than the nikon 12-24. You do have to learn how to use this because as soon as the camera/lens is not level, it starts to introduce distortion. I believe there is a photoshop plug-in for this and other lens to deal with the distortion that comes in the form of leaning trees, buildings, etc. For this image, I got down low and did my best to keep the camera level and not miss the opportunity. The brown building (La Baie) has a slight lean to the left and the railing on the mid-right has a slight lean to the right. In this image I don't think those distortions are significant in terms of what I was trying to capture. Perhaps you could google "tokina 11-16mm vs sigma 10-20mm" - also check out http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/307-sigma-af-10-20mm-f4-56-hsm-ex-dc-lab-test-report--review?start=1. A photonet friend also advised me to do critical work between 12-18mm and keep within the f11-f13 range. I have also learned that I should shoot without my UV filter when pointing into the sun or other strong light source - perhaps I should do that also with my 18-70mm. Hope this helps.
