leo burkey 0 Posted June 4, 2009 These type of images are always a challenge to a photographer. Shooting directly into the sun at sunset one must be careful to maintain shadow detail and manage flair. Yosemite in the summer is almost always very hazy and adds that problem to the mix. Although this is a remake of a previous post, I find rendition to better convey the summer heat, haze and sunset. The image was toned with Ektalure Cream. Link to comment
lonebearimages 0 Posted June 5, 2009 This simply could not be better! Truly one of your most stunning landscapes, and a very majestic scene to boot. Superb details and the tonal range is quite phenomenal. I think the lone scraggly pine tree is incredibly important to the composition and sense of depth. I am assuming, based upon the direction and point-of-view, that this was taken on a hike to the falls (Nevada Falls). Excellent processing; and ya just gotta love that Ektalure cream toning, Amigo! Cheers! Bear Oh, and BTW, this has just gone into "My Favorites". Link to comment
leo burkey 0 Posted June 5, 2009 Thanks for all the kind words. I believe this was taken at Taft Point about a mile hike off of the Glacier Point road. Link to comment
rbanfield 0 Posted June 6, 2009 Another Ace from the Lion! Wondered where this was taken from til I read the exchange between you and the Bear. El Captitan stands out even as you shot against the sun. I think what makes this shot is all the different tonal ranges you managed to capture as you travel back thru the photograph. I think I'm counting over a dozen different ridges and hills from front to back. Excellent work Leo, as always!..Lefty Link to comment
cphilpott 0 Posted June 6, 2009 Well well, very well done. And now I want to learn more about the toning process. Link to comment
leo burkey 0 Posted June 6, 2009 First of all thanks for the encouraging words. I'm always willing to share any of my secrets; all you have to do is ask. Ektalure Cream was a Kodak paper of old that was one of the best warm tone papers that ever lived. A like so many of other papers are no longer made. Unfortunately during my printing days I couldn't see their beauty and I stuck with the cold tone papers. Now that I'm older and wiser and willing to entertain new ideas, I've come to love something that I swore that I would never use. Ektalure Cream is gone forever but it's tone can live on. I would love to give credit to the author of this formula but unfortunately I have forgotten the author's name. I can tell you that I picked it up in the tutorials section of Layers Magazine. I urge all of you to visit their site and take advantage to their wonderful tutorials. Now the formula, make a Color Balance adjustment layer:with the following settings:Shadow 2,0,-4.Midtones 2,0,-4 and Highlights 5,0,-8. I have made an action that plays and adds the toning with a single click of the mouse. Link to comment
