Ciao Mauro,

Congratulazioni, ottimo lavoro.

Un saluto, Alberto.

The sum of your critiques is exactly what I think about this shot. I mean, that now that you expressed the ciritiques I see easily what are the weak and strong point of this picture. Paolo I tried all the ways I know to recover the whites, but this resul bring as a side effect a light gray all over the picture. And yes, an f11 would have been better than an f8, but the picture, as far as the smoker as been caught "on the fly" and as far as I started to take pictures 35 years ago, when I go on the street I keep the lens on f8 and haven't had the chance to modify it.

Alberto you are right about the fill flash and for a nanosecond I tohught to fill-flash but this could have attract the pattention of the lady and I didn't want to give explanation of why and how and so on. For the fact that the hat looks like the protagonist of the picture my wife made the same comment (like lieutenant's Colombo wife) but I answer to both of you that the protagonist is the net shadow designed on the face of the lady.

Rajat, you are right and I have not been able to correct the contrast although I tried in a lot of ways. When you have the 12 AM sun in central Italy you cannot deal the light with.

Thank-you to all of you for the very helpful comments you've made my friends. Have a nice week-end

This is candid photography! And candid photography is photography stripped to the essentials. It only requires the willingness to let technique play second fiddle to spontaneity. And that's what you have done here! Compliments!

Ho provato a lavorare sulle alte e basse luci.

Mauro, S.G. is a bit busy these days to be available for translation. Do oblige. Just the gist.....thanks

Dear friend, you are so right!. A lot of times I scold my Italian fellows because they don't use the English language (or that language similar to English that allow almost anyone to understand the gist of a conversation) and I made the same error. Forgive me please!

Paolo published a manipulated version where he had been able to recover the hilights and to lighten up a bit the shadows. Paolo asks to confront the versions and to comment.

I answered that I appreciated his efforts and that the work he made with the hilights is wonderful, mostly for the hairs on the right side, and I will try to replicate it.

I said too that, on the contrary, I prefer the original version, as far as the shadows are concerned, since, imho, my darker shadow with more contrast helps in attracting the eye on the net shadow cast by the hat on the lady's face.

Here is it, Rajat Sir! :-)

PS: what's S.G? Or should I ask WHO is S.G.?

ok, thanks...now i shall voice my opinion -- as u know i have an irritating penchant for that: i know i'm more often than not advocating changes -- and getting flak for it -- in this instance i'm for no changes at least to the eyes area, which i expect would be the area under shadow (i would have loved to disagree with u but it pains me to have to agree at least partially with you). More reactions: with the changes the photograph has become duller, the splendid net hat and her hair on the right side (photograph) have lot lustre -- but the hair looks more balanced left and right, so let the sun not shine so strongly on that side of her face; her difficult skin has improved; but the ear-ring on that side (photo right) has lost sheen and in fact the other one which is in shadow looks more bright!

What difficult photographs you take, Mauro, putting your friends to to so much effort -- not so much in my case i'll admit.

And S.G., my friend (had to restrain myself not to preface it with an appropriate adjective), is Sonia Gandhi, Italian born Queen Mother of India, whom I admire and respect. She's busy mothering her squabbling supporters -- their are rich fruits to be plucked, plums.

Please inform your Italian friends you have a most inquisitive Indian friend who threatens to google Italian words he doesn't understand and thereby make a hash of this ancient language.

Ciao. It is 3-24am here so Buona Notte to me....rajat

a person like you would be invented! I appreciate your comment and I'm relly not in pain when you agree with me, on the contrary, I start to be afraid when I do agree with you. Will call my doctor to have a diagnosis.

I rather like this, Mauro. The light is harsh, indeed, but I'm sure this is exactly what she looked like on this particular day. The wrinkles and imperfections in her lovely face are evident.....no glossing over to 'create' the perfect face. It's a face of character, and I think you've done well with this. And I love El's comment above.

I attempted a similar shot years ago but my subject was too much in the dark. Your is very much in the light and I like that better. Good work.
