Really impressive shot. The bird is sharp with great feather details and sharp eye. Good perch nice BG. Highlight on its bill a bit too strong, Consider burning it a tad.

El is doing my thinking for me:-) Love this ..the way the post is tight to the frame and that the bird is against that dramatic background...Regards

Dick... I think the 80-400 just went to the top of my wish list - of course, I have to learn to use it as well as this. Beautiful shot of Mr. Robin with exquisite detail.... Mike

Thank you all for your very kind comments!

Mike, I have really enjoyed my 80-400 mm lens. But, it is a financial compromise which you can read about here...

It has excellent optics and it's sweet spot is f8. You can handhold it, which is really important in situations where a tripod just won't work. It has slow AF and it is a relatively slow lens, like the 18-200. But, you can get it for about $1500, compared to $5000 for the 200-400mm f4 or $8000 for the 500mm f4.

Anyway, if you can learn to live with it's limitations, you'll get some pleasing results.

All the best to everyone!

Dick

Thanks for the info Dick. I read the referenced thread with great interest and find that my limitation is totally and 100% the difference in price. As a hobbyist there's no way to justify the cost of the 200-400 f/4, even though that range and f-stop would be first choice. I am, without apology, a believer in brand compatibility between bodies and lens, so after market lens don't interest me.

Sorry to hijack this thread and getting back to Mr. Robin; the results you've gotten here is completely acceptable, in fact, excellent.

Thanks again... Mike

Una definicion increible, acompañada de excelentes colores y la pose del pajaro forman una composicion fantastica.

Me gusta mucho la foto,y como el fondo desenfocado hace destacar al pajarito.

Un saludo y max.

Thank you very much, Linh and Ramon!

Mike, that was my conclusion, too. The optical quality of the 80-400 makes it's limitations easier to live with. You just have to learn to use it. I really enjoy mine. Maybe, if the market comes back, the stars align correctly and I'm able to retire someday, I'll treat myself to a more expensive option...we'll see:-)

Have a good day!

Outstanding lighting and attractive bg. Its not what you have, its what you do with it. Well, actually what you have, is a plus and some days the stars may align.

Thank you, Monte! I'm happy with this shot for what I was able to do, walking out of my garage and shooting this handheld in about 5 minutes. The bright sun had everything to do with it as I would never have been able to shoot with this lens at iso 200 otherwise. I would love to have the 500 f4, but that'll have to wait on the stars:-)

Best regards,

Dick
