my favorite of the recent Purgatory images. I think the lines are

stronger, there's still the feeling and evidence of snow, and it's

somber enough. Those with the mud bank, I'm not so sure they fit the

scheme.

It's interesting to compare the two images, Doug. I prefer the impact of the first, but agree that the mud bank doesn't add much. To my mind, this is too much purgatory and not enough clout.

I agree. I wish it were foggy. I remember it was, a little, but I was too slow finding the right spot. The search continues....

thank you Jeff

Doug, I accidently (and fortunately) came across your second image. It's hard for me to state a preference. I like the red soil in the other, but there may be too much of it. The bare soil is in keeping with the bare branches on the trees and the title you've chosen, so I probably tend toward that one. The multitude of various tree trunks and the interlacing of the branches are the main attractions (aesthetically) for me in this photo.

Stephen, thanks for your comments here, and elsewhere tonight. I like how you phrased it: "multitude of various tree trunks and the interlacing of the branches." Makes me think of how they're all unique individuals, but still united as one forest.

Doug, I found your "Virginia Purgatory" folder, and of all of the images there, this one is my favorite based on aesthetics. Some of the others (especially the B&W) have a more ominous tone, tending (I guess) toward the hellish side of purgatory. I can appreciate all of the experimentation to get the desired effect and to express the concept.

I would like to combine the two: Dense, dark fog and heavy snow, but in such conditions, I find it difficult to get out of my house and make it to where the trees are just this way. Too many houses in my neighborhood.
