Great capture, Mauro! The stone pillar or whatever bottom-left anchors the scene. However, the one on the right is a distraction. A crop from the right is what I'd suggest. I don't think you had a tripod with you...

Un colpo d'occhio di grande impatto. Una piazza tra le più belle che abbia mai visto in fotografia (dal vivo non ho ancora avuto il piacere): decorata dalle luci artificiali dei lampioni e dei negozi è ancora più affascinante. Il dettaglio non è il massimo: micromosso o problemi di messa a fuoco? In ogni caso una foto in cui mi perderei piacevolmente dentro per un quarto d'ora!

Rajat thank-you very much for your support; I understand and share your opinion about the pillar on the right, but cropping out it crops too, imo, the sense of semi-round shape of the square. Anyway here above you can judge the result. Let me know your opinion, please.

Cropping does reduce the extended angle of the buildings on the right and in that sense does perhaps minimize to an extent the curve of the piazza. But cropping also balances somewhat the composition in giving almost equal 'footage' to the two angles of the piazza. The pillar on the left is squat and so is the building on the left. The pillar on the right is taller and so are the buildings on that side. In a sense it balances the composition. I guess it really boils down to personal choice. My choice would be no pillar on the right...

Mauro, nella mia opinione, nonostante i pilastri, mi piace più la versione ampia... che permette di vedere la grandezza della piazza... uno i punti forti della composizione. Un dettaglio molto bene captato e non commentato è l'inclinazione del suolo della piazza senza che sembri che la foto sia fatta in una barca, bravo! Saluti cordiali, Luis

Dear friend, I see your point and, even if I prefer the original version I have to say that your suggestion gives a picture not so "closed" and "flat" as I feared, so thank-you nayway to have made me look at things from another point of view

Per me far vedere la forma a catino della piazza era la cosa più importante insieme alla trama del pavimento che è incredibile (guardala in grande. Purtroppo nessuna foto che ho fatto rende ragione dell'ampiezza della piazza.

 

The most important things I tried to transmit to the viewer are the "bowl" shape of Piazza del Campo (I suppose it's the only Plaza all over the world with such a geometry) and the pavement texture that's really incredible. I took a lot of picture but none of them gives the correct idea about the roundness and the space of the Plaza.

 

I got a very rapid glance to your portfolio and I marked you as interesting because of some beautiful pictures I will come back to study better and to comment in the next days. Nice to meet you!

Ciao Mauro e grazie per i tuoi gentili commenti, a me mi va bene in italiano.

 

Realmente è una piazza spettacolare, io sono stato lì quindici anni fa, durante il Palio, ed io sono rimasto impressionato per la forma e le dimensioni della piazza ma la verità è che c'era tanta gente che non potei apprezzare il pavimento.

 

Non è facile, in una stessa fotografia senza un grandangolo di meno di 20mm, captare la tessitura del pavimento e tutta la grandezza della piazza ma guardando la tua fotografia ampliata tu l'ottieni. Magari non è tutto l'impatto visuale che ti piacerebbe ma sta realmente molto bene.
