rarmstrong 0 Posted May 4, 2009 Thank you all for the very kind comments. This was a learning experience for me. This was the first time that I noticed how much the mirror actuation vibrates the camera on the tripod. I also realized that I forgot to turn off the VR on the lens. I'm anxious to try this again. JimCowan 0 Posted May 4, 2009 I really like the rim of light separating on the circumference. Always fascinating to view the moon with such good detail. Link to comment
dandem 1 Posted May 4, 2009 Unbelievable detail, Dicky. I have tries so many times to capture the moon - never clear and always with a halo. Great work my friend. Have a good week. Regards, Lawrence. Link to comment
Not Here 93 Posted May 4, 2009 Dick... The VR and shutter slap shot doesn't seem to have harmed this at all. I was attracted to the shot immediately, and pleasantly surprised to find it yours (only your third "moon shot" and the first closeup). A really good shot of the moon. Thanks for sharing... rarmstrong 0 Posted May 4, 2009 Thank you very much, Jim, Lawrence and Mike. I think that part of the key to a decent shot of the moon is to take the image at twilight. The sky was really blue in the background and I darkened it in processing. I shot this in 14-bit RAW and decreased the exposure by 1.5 stops in post processing. I also brought up the luminance of yellow and red a bit and there is some sharpening and increased contrast. I've been aware that I need a more solid tripod. I've been using my old Bausch and Lomb from my spotting scope. I also have never used the mirror lock up feature on my camera which is supposed to be specifically designed for this type of shot. I'll have to pull out my Thom Hogan book again. Anyway, my daughter and I did this together in our front yard. It was a lot of fun. Best regards, Dick Link to comment

rarmstrong 0 Posted May 4, 2009 Thank you, Glenn! So good to hear from you, Ton! I had breakfast on Sunday with a surgeon from Belgium(not exactly where you are but close). We had an interesting discussion about how payment for health care works in Europe. You can see that we are struggling with that issue over here. Anyway, thanks for the comment...I enjoyed it!
