This is my second photograph of a snake (I didn't upload the first). I shot

this with a canon rebel XTi and a 600mm. Would love to hear your

opinions. Thanks!

Colton, this is outstanding. I dream of one day making such images. Would you please let me know how you went about making this? I can't even imagine how I would go about making such a picture. How did you find the subject? What did you do after that, etc. I would have perhaps run away with fear!!

Photographing snakes is a very exciting adventure.! The snake is sharp in focus, but very small in relation with the entire area of the frame. I would suggest to crop it, then the threading snake will be seen in higher dimension trapping more attention.

I was wondering if you have some other compositions with the snake? You were photographing with a 600mm and the snake is defending from a second one person.. right?

When photographing snakes, try to use as much as area as possible... Snakes need a lot of patience because they body is usually "spreaded" along the frame what can be a waist of space. With all respect to your valuable photograph, I cropped it to show you my approach.

I do like to photograph snakes also. I was wondering if you would take a time to visit my photo.net portfolio and personal website www.lopezjohnston.com I hope you enjoy the snakes!

Keep doind it and KEEP AWAY FROM THE FANGS!

Best

I like the cropped version but would leave the snake just a little bit more "head" room. Great dof and color.

Well Satish, as much as I would like to tell you that I was walking through a dangerous jungle when all of the sudden, a giant eagle swooped down to attack this snake. Little did the eagle know, this snake was ready to fight back. The snake struck and swallowed the eagle.

Ok that’s not what happened, my brother was driving back from town and as he was coming down our road (we live out in the country) he saw, caught, and brought the snake home. We then photographed it. As I was taking pictures of it, our great dane walked by it and the snake tried to strike. So, that’s my story…….

Second question. How did you protect yourself from the snake, while photographing it? As you can see, I have not done any wild life photographs and am curious. I am very curious how photographs of wild animals in the wild are done.

Satish,

This snake isn’t venomous so I wasn’t too worried about getting bitten. Even though this was shot with a 600mm, I was still pretty close. Most snakes only strike half their body length. Since it was a 4 foot snake, he only could strike 2 feet. I was just out of his strike zone. Besides, he wasn’t too mad because he only struck once (at my dog). I think he was just bluffing even though a 4 foot snake is pretty intimidating :-) Most wildlife photographs are easy to come by if you keep your eyes open and your camera ready.

Thanks for your comments!

You have some beautiful snakes down there. Cool shot! We had a great basin gopher snake in our backyard yesterday, and I took photos after I took it out of town and turned it loose where there are fewer roads. I love to watch them.
