samrat 1 Posted April 11, 2009 A variation of a photo posted earlier. Heavily cropped, I think it adds to the composition. I would like to see this as a totally different photo (and possibly the better of the two) and so am in a bit of emotional turmoil. Is it ethical to crop and "compose" this way in the digital darkroom? I'd have been so happy if this was my original composition. Please let me know your views in the matter. Thank you. rajnishduara 0 Posted April 11, 2009 Sam, I think its entirely legal to crop, this was done during daguerreotypes also. You can take a large printout and cut to your understanding of your subject. This is a very good attempt, there can be many ways to crop, you have cropped in such a way that there is a bit of artificiality in the top portion, especially if one had seen the earlier posting. I believed the arch has a very good effect in these photos, rather than giving more space to the left side, I just changed a bit from the earlier image. Its my personal view entirely. I hope you like it. The best interest in this snap comes from the diffuse imagery of the people walking in the background, exceptional shot, very artistic. Link to comment
samrat 1 Posted April 11, 2009 Aesthetically, your cropping is better than what I have done...there is a sense of completeness to it. Perhaps it is a bit more conventional as well. The arch (and also the lamp post) adds to the overall feel. What I wanted to highlight here was the way the people are placed, something that takes you into the photo. It is also helped by the three small posts to the right. The problem is, if I wanted to bring in the arch here, the photo would have been too large. This, I thought, was the best way to show what I wanted. Thanks for bringing out a different angle and reasoning to the shot. Link to comment
life-in-perspective 0 Posted April 11, 2009 There may be differing opinion regarding this shot, but to me the composition is great. It is taking the viewer directly to sea ahead. This shot is all about people, while the other version centers around the overall scene. And thank you Samrat for your nice comment and giving me space in your gallery. Warm regards. Link to comment
mugglee 0 Posted April 12, 2009 Samrat, I like the way the black frames this image completely. Nice work. Link to comment
