Frederick,

You have the correct idea of putting the sun behind her and the background in shade. You must expose for her face! I can understand having her off to the left of the frame so that you could include the building in the background. Also, she looks a bit like an English Sheep Dog (just her hair, not her face) - get the hair out of her eyes. New or not it is always nice to have a pretty girl in town. You might want to have her turn a bit to the camera. She will look a little thinner. She will love you for it.

Good shot - just watch the skin tones,

I'd like to take this opportunity to explain a little of my compositional decisions...

The title is about being new to an area and a little lacking in self confidence... you mention her hair needing to be out of the face, I understand that artistically speaking, but this is an instrument of separation here, allowing her hair to fall onto and obstruct part of her face is a visual message about her desire to be somewhat shielded from others.

Next is her torso position to the camera, true, an angle reduces the figure, artistically desirable, but choices had to be made... again, to convey a visual message tied to my theme... having her squared to the camera shows vulnerability and openness to the photographer or person looking at the photo... therefore more engaged. Had she been turned (slimmed) the visual message would be an aversion or separation from the viewer.

It's all meant to be emotive and should speak visually... Thank you for taking time to share your ideas and make suggestions. That's what we are all here for... very much appreciated.

First off, I certainly like the image. If I were to offer my tweaks....

When I looked at it in PS, the color space was Adobe RGB. Should be sRGB for the web. Image looked a bit better when I brought it into PS. I would have liked to seen less DOF. I would have really liked to have seen some balanced fill flash or a reflector, camera left. I am from the ALWAYS light the eyes camp! With her body squared left eye is too hidden, at least IMHO. I think a few strands of hair would have done the trick. I'm not so sure about the scarf. Might like it better with fill. For me the face and then neck have to different colors separated by the scarf- and the chest color isn't pleasant. Might clone the few strands of hair on our left that are more or less sticking straight out. And I would the branch in the bottom right of the frame- the one that looks like a claw entering from the right! Just my take. It's a nice shot no matter!

Here is one that I missed. I find it interesting that even though her hair is hanging down, I feel I can still see her eye. Am I imagining it? Wonderful light and location. Wonderful!
