I had some difficulty in optimising this photo due to the contrast

difference across the shot. There are some details at the top of the door

which are easily lost. Thanks for your comments and especially for any

suggestion on how to approach such situations.

Sam, I have faced similar situations before. Have you used a filter? You will have to wait for the correct time, direct sunlight always is a problem. The only thing that you can do is to adjust the levels, work on the brightness and contrast, also curve adjustment might help.
