Shot Memorial day weekend 2001 at Hearst State Beach in San Simeon, CA. I wanted to reshoot my favorite ocean pier in different light, this time around 4:00pm in overcast light...

Details: Canon Elan II, Velvia, Canon 24-85@~80mm, f22@~4", screw-on 2-stop ND (non grad), 81B

Stacking the ND and the 81B gave me this unusual color and slowed down the water (!)...

Great lighting indeed, and excellent composition. The colors could be polarized a little, but that's of course a matter of taste. I like it. Regards.

Hey Tom, Nicely planned photo. I like the form of the structure, Looks like a tall animal in a way with the outriggers reaching out. I don't think this shot can be improved much as it stands but I am a big fan of shooting a series on a particular subject or model. This is a great subject to go after again. I would try a night shot under full moon. Good work Tom, love to see more, Brad

Wow! Can't believe I missed this one. The pastel colors are so soothing. Very nice. I would love to hang this in my office and use it to... drift away.

Brad, I completely agree. I visited this pier maybe eight times and no matter what kind of light there is, this subject makes the shot. The pier is deteriorating badly and it won't be around for long so I want to get a lot of these before it's "restored". ;-)

Excellent perspective & absolutely love the water motion and color (almost makes the pier look super-imposed). Great shot in a GREAT portfolio

Tom, this is one of my favorites of yours. You've done a great job with this particular pier. You have extensively used a GND 2 stop quite effectively as well.

This was featured when I turned on Photo.net this morning. This image is remarkably reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral and illustrates the spiritual wonder inspired by the tall vaults and the sun coming through the windows. The thought did not occur to me immediately, but struck me when looked at the very end of the pier. I could almost see an altar there. All of this is incidental, of course, to the fact that this is simply a superb photo.
