There is a photographer here on PN called Rudolf Kartelin http://photo.net/photodb/member-photos?user_id=4010572 whose work, in my opinion, is second to none. I don’t know him and I’ve never met him – I think lives somewhere in Central Europe. I don’t “like” all that he does, but I think I understand what he’s trying to say. His work is quite exceptional.

Why exceptional? Given that he is an illusionist, like all of us on PN, Kartelin makes images that are many things at the same time. His portraits turn what most of us do on their heads – he re-defines the 21st Century portrait, demands bold attention and sets a new benchmark for what we on PN should be looking to achieve.

Kartelin combines a brutal, totally candid and honest view of his subjects with the delivery of images that are created with the uttermost care and delicacy - look at the light playing in the hair of this model: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8569492 . Yet this lass is no model – she’s not a leggy John Peri muse lounging about his apartment in Paris – no, she, like all the other models in his collection are men and women from down the road. They are bar, factory, shop workers – look at the hands on this woman http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8578444 She is not a lazy women – she works. Note also that Peri has made a comment on March 12, but I think he has missed the point entirely. What Kartelin is saying is not an echo of the past, though I agree that his use of colours suggest that of an Old Master – what I think he is trying to say is, that portraiture of ordinary folk needs re-appraising and re-focusing.

Shoot them in their skin, in an incredibly simplified space (most of his images have a very simple black back drop), with their/his favourite object – make the photograph as raw as possible, yet treat the entire editing process with all the consummate skill and care that only a true professional can deliver.

For me Kartelin is truly inspirational, (as opposed to others who I might regard as aspirational) – he’s kept me awake at nights working out what he’s trying to say. And only when I had a preliminary go at one of his images did I begin to understand what he’s about. He did this: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7555329 and I did the image above. Kartelin wins hands-down - but my portrait photography will never be the same again.

Thank you appreciated my work. I do not like pictures without meaning and content. I love painting. Before taking pictures, looking at the work of artists (especially the old masters). And you also like painting. This is evident in your work.

I think that picture should bear the thought. Do not take photographs of the body, but to make a theatrical production. It is hard to do when the space where you work, the size of 2x2 meters.

I'm trying to show life through the beauty of women. For me, all women are beautiful.

You judge my work.

Thank you for your kind words. Regards, Rudolf

Sorry for bad English.
