bettiecl 0 Posted March 26, 2009 This temple built into granite caves in an isolated rock outcrop that reaches 600ft above the plain below. Its one of the oldest Buddhist shrines in Sri Lanka and dates from the 3rd to 2nd century BC. The sculptures inside the five caves are also hewn from the hard rock and all the walls are covered with the finest wall paintings. To experience this splendour upon entering the cave, was worth the many many steps up the mountain. Hot and humid as this tropical island can be in March. Link to comment
