This temple built into granite caves in an isolated rock outcrop that

reaches 600ft above the plain below. Its one of the oldest Buddhist

shrines in Sri Lanka and dates from the 3rd to 2nd century BC. The

sculptures inside the five caves are also hewn from the hard rock and

all the walls are covered with the finest wall paintings. To experience

this splendour upon entering the cave, was worth the many many

steps up the mountain. Hot and humid as this tropical island can be in

March.

This brings back old memories. i was there in 1998 and i think it was one of the nicest temples i have seen since. Nice picture from the little buddha next to the big one.
