Digression

This family lives in a one-room tenement -- the doorway to which is

visible on the left. I was passing by and noticed the two boys doing their

homework in the communal courtyard while the mother squatted nearby

combing her freshly oiled hair. As I shot this photo the boys became

naturally curious and looked up from their work, only to be firmly

admonished by their mother. What really impressed me were the

fabricated worktables being used by the boys. These must have been

specially fabricated for the boys' use in this courtyard where there was

good natural light and sufficient space -- unlike in their hovel. For me it

signifies the value placed on education by these slum dwellers.
