Cimitero delle Fontanelle - Naples Italy - Originally a quarry of

yellow travertine used by the Greeks, this impressive trapezoidal

cavern, together with its offshoots, became a cemetery for plague

victims from the 17th century onward. At the end of the 19th century,

it was a focal point for the somewhat macabre Culto delle Anime

Pezzentelle: a skull would be adopted by a local person, often given a

name, and then expected to intercede with the heavens on behalf of its

sponsor. Requested favors might include cures for infertility, winning

lottery numbers, or simple advice. Some 40,000 skulls are still

visible, while over one million are thought to be compacted beneath

the soil surface. The cemetery was officially closed to cult worship

in 1969, but after extensive restoration it is now periodically

reopened for viewing under the management of Napoli Sotterranea.
