Wonderful shot taken in midday light, the most difficult kind. The composition and sharpness are both first-rate. This one is very close to perfection. My only nit is that the ND grad used is a little too strong; the reflection is brighter than the real thing, a physical impossibility.

Yes, I was limited with my choice of gnd filters. I only have one! SHOOT! And that was a 3-stop hard. A 2-stop would have been better in this situation if I had one, maybe even just a 1-stop, heck, I dunno. I would've tried 'em all, that's fore sure. Since only one gnd was in my budget, I was recommended a 3-stop hard. I will soon be ordering a 2-stop so shots like this one will be more evenly lit. Thanks for the comments, much appreciated! Don't you hate those darn equipment limitations? I feel like a fly fisherman limited to choosing one fly for all waters!

This was a mid-morning shot. The sun had long been on the two

distinctive background peaks of Mt. Ritter and Banner Peak, but the

foreground shore was just receiving the first rays of light over the

ridge behind me. I shot this with Provia 100 and a 3-stop hard GND

filter to try and balance the lighting differential between the

bright background and darker foreground. No other filters were used

(i.e. no UV or polarizer, etc.). Is there anything I should have

done differently with filters/composition/film, etc.? Any advice

and suggestions are always appreciated. This photo.net is a

fantastic place to learn from others and get great ideas! I'm

amazed at the plethora of beautiful photographs of all styles on

this site! Thanks to all!

While it is true that a one stop GND probably would have produced more realistic results, and it is a little bothersome that the blue at the bottom is lighter than the top, there is no absolute rule dictating that photography must abide by the rules of realism. Just tell everyone that you used the filter for artistic expression to achieve the desired results. It's a personal thing, isn't it? It is a wonderful picture, at any rate. I'm just wishing I could be in a position to take the shot. I would gladly take the criticism. Thanks for posting.

Buck: Is this an earlier image? Your later shots have advanced in quality so quickly it makes me wonder. Still, a very nice image from a burgeoning master.
