pnital 36 Posted March 11, 2009 Braids, Ethiopian style. Market square. Thanks for viewing. Link to comment
Donna Stavis 0 Posted March 11, 2009 Pouty, closed-off expression nicely complements the industrious of the more colorful hairdresser. The baby bottle adds a twist to this an open-ended story. A moment in the lives of two women... I'm interested in what comes next. Hope you had a crazy, fun Purim. ; ) Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted March 11, 2009 Quite expressive, both of them. One intent on finishing her work, the other intent on being done and going on her way. The eyes of the seated girl are fantastic, working well with her crossed arms. Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted March 11, 2009 Pnina; The extreme difference in expressions you have captured here are what make this work so well. The girl with a task at hand being so focused and studious and the girl having her hair braided looking dreamy, bored and more than a bit impatient. There is a bit of a haze to this image which I think comes from a touch of lens flaring from the strong light behind the figures. I like the effect this has on the mood, lending a dreamy sort of lazy warm afternoon glow to the scene. On a recent trip to the Caribbean the local girls kept following Vida around trying to get her to sit so that they could braid her hair. Link to comment
michaellinder 16,611 Posted March 11, 2009 I concur with the comments already posted. Each subject's eyes tell a different story. Although the hair stylist's eyes are not visible, they are strongly focused on her work. It is possible that the customer is gazing at something or someone not in the visual field of this photo, but it seems to me that she simply is staring into space. The pair of bottles in the foreground is another interesting element. To which subject do they belong? If they belong to the hair stylist, then there may be another reason for her being so intent on her work. She may want to spend some more time with her baby. On the other hand, the customer looks a bit young for motherhood. Excellent composition. Very effective depth of field. My compliments, michael Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted March 11, 2009 An interesting slice of life to be sure. Surely the baby bottle contains hair conditioner & the nipple simply used for controlling it. Nice exposure & good use of DOF to control emphasis on your subjects. Looks like it could be a tedious job. Best, LM. Link to comment
amalsircar 2 Posted March 11, 2009 Pnina, in the earlier image it was the smile of the girl and in this image it is the look of the girl, that are fascinating. Very good exposure,DOF & street-photography. Is this process of braiding painful? By any chance, is she looking out for her child? Is there a feeding bottle by her side? Link to comment
Funtak 0 Posted March 11, 2009 I love the way you see the world; it does not have to be epiphany or revelation to make a good photo. Link to comment

tibig 0 Posted March 11, 2009 Your picture has a very pleasant warmth. A good example of the amalgamated culture we live in. And the bottles leave some more guess-work to the viewer. I also like the fact that the picture "reads in Hebrew" (top right to bottom left). Regards, Tibi Link to comment

pnital 36 Posted March 12, 2009 Donna, thanks for your nice comment,I loved the outside hairdresser "Salon" , with the baby bottle.....photographing the Ethiopian community for two years the scene is familiar to me,and I could not resist,... Jeff, It takes a long time to prepare a head full of braids, and It was interesting to observe, their expressions were the trigger Gord, as usual you have put your finger on the main center, their expressions.... The light was strong as It was close to midday, but I could not leave it....I loved the scene. Thanks for your extensive impression, I wonder If Vida has tried It? Michael, thanks as well, It is a Friday art market and they were seating in a very animated surrounding .... The bottle belongs to the hairdresser, as later on I saw her with the child... So btw she did some money.... Jef, thanks as well Len, nice to see you here It takes a long time and skills to do it right which is a skill the Ethiopian girls are very good at. Amal, it is not painful, but takes time and skills to do it. The bottle was for the hairdresser's baby. Thanks for your comment. Tibi, Glauco , Cynthia, Jeffrey, Vladimir and Alberto, I appreciate !, thanks all of you very much. Link to comment
