Consider your composition. The eyes are the most important part of a portrait but if they are placed very close to dead center of the rectangle, they lose importance. Take some principle of composition (say the so-called Rule of Thirds) and try recropping the image to utilize that principle. Consider whether a vertical composition would have better fitted a portrait. The inclusion of a little triangle of purple (lower right corner) is called a trap - it pulls the eyes from the subject. This facial expression is strong and obviously the child is reacting to something. Make us see that reaction as the central drama that is going on.
