German Shorthair Pup - High Key, Quiet Mood

Matt Laur

Handheld D300 with Nikon 50/1.8, single-point AF-S, from about 18 inches. ISO 200, 1/200, f/11. Key light was a Zeus Ringmaster through a 56-inch Moon Unit. One AB800's with honeycomb grids were used for a rimlight, and a second was in a medium softbox to hit the backdrop.

Another from a recent series with this 6-week old and her littermates.

Thanks for visiting, and for feedback.

Thanks, Marc. Yup, I think that I may also like the low-key lighting of the other shot a bit more.

For me this one is the one I prefer ...

I actually miss the white hair above the eye and around the mouth, which in the other photo are giving a very nice contrast, but here, I think the white background helps seeing the defocussed part around the head a bit more, and gives a bit more depth.

And of course, the running nose, is also one of the elements which makes me prefer this shot over the second one ( probably because of my punk years )

Thanks, L-P.

I suppose I should have shot the same puppy in both the low and high key rigs, just for comparison. The one with the white whiskers is the only one in the litter with those markings, and it seemed more interesting to put him to work in the lower-key set. I do like your obeservation about how the lit backdrop allows the three-dimensionality of the subject to become more tangible. And, I'm glad I'm not the only one that is amused by the runny nose!

Matt, I love this shot!! Very nice detail and focal sharpness. Great composition and nice contrasting colors. Congrats on a well done image.

Even though I prefer the previous post (white whiskers) because the colors just seem to have more richness and depth with the black background, I find this one magnetic. I sense that this pup may be a tad shy or more of a "pleaser" and is watching for instruction, even to the point of ignoring that hilarious runny nose.

Thanks for showing the light layout. I have on many occasions wondered how I might achieve a certain lighting, only to find out it's a studio set-up. Knowing ahead of time the complexity (or not) of lighting lets me just sit back and enjoy.

All said, your usual excellent product... Mike

it's puppy time again. I better not show these to my wife or she'll want yet another one. To be honest I may be somewhat biased but in all honesty I haven't met one yet who's better at this than you are. Top drawer stuff.

Ah, you're cheating again. How will you ever know whether you're getting the 7's for your photography or for the irresistible cuteness of the pup? This is my favorite of the fine series. I enjoy the set-up picture, even as I find it daunting. I'm always happy to see you posting a new series.

And thank you for the lighting setup.

How the heck does the moondobx thingy work with the ringflash?
