"Out With the Cold, In With the Blue"

Spring is arriving at a feverish pace in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains along highway 166 near Maricopa. This meadow is at the entrance to the Wind Wolves Preserve. The late afternoon light intensifies the color. In two to three months, this will be long gone; an arid, brown landscape will then dominate. The slopes in the distance will soon show fields of Poppies, Lupine, Fiddleneck, Coreopsis, Mariposa Lily and others various wildflowers. For me, it is a sight to behold. Thanks for taking a look! Mark... What a wonderful sight. I had no idea these flat plains and rolling hills contained so many flowers. Spring has had some setbacks here in the South and East, but it's showing off for you there. Thanks for sharing... Mike

Thanks Vencenzo, Mike, Ali and Ruslan. Mike, this region of California is comparable to anything I have seen for spring wildflowers. Even the arid deserts will put on a show, given some intermittent rains through the winter. We have had a fair mount of rain (Ahnold, however, has declared a state of emergency because of drought; a lack of thick snow pack in the higher elevations I guess). The best displays are in pockets along the various terrains, but the pockets could be acres large. Once you are able to get positioned in a pocket, it appears as if the wildflowers go on forever. This area here is probably a couple of square miles in size.
