The reason I have given this Pic the high rating is because it is part of a series of the same bird - (I don't think I am mistaken). The story is beautiful. The subject has an air of meaning business tempered by eligance.

I like the nature best. The title has a double meaning: the catch of the day for the heron as well as for you. BTW, the fish seems a pretty big one, as big as heron's head.

This is a shot to be proud of. You've gotten behavior at the peak of the action and you were able to get close enough to use a 300. Herons, in my experience, do not tolerate the human presence well, but you have here a young bird (the color of the upper bill is the key) which perhaps has not yet developed the wariness of its elders.

I really like your whole Heron sequence. How close were you able to get to the bird? And am I right to assume with the 1D you are shooting something like a 390mm effective focal length? I have been watching Herons for about 2 weeks and the closest I've been able to get with my 300mm lens and a film camera is not nearly this close, at best I have snuck up on the bird and gotten it to fill about 1/3 of the frame. Is this bird very tolerant of humans? I have also yet to see them actually catch anything.

THis was taken on the beach at Santa Barbra. I was fortunate that this bird was there and i slowly walked up to him a few steps every minute or two. Mark

Ah.. he must be practically tame. I was out today, I saw one fly in and he hadn't seen me. I wasn't even moving, and he landed about 30-40 yards from me. When he saw me he took off and flew away... very wary of people.
