Cheat. You waited until he landed. I think it's worth trying a slightly wider DOF (f4.5?). Good focus on the head (most important) but this would be even better if the abdomen was also in focus. 60mm macro prime with tripod works well on these stationary shots, but 70-300 better for the flying ones.
