You have a great eye for nature shots, and a spectacular portfolio of images, I look forward to going through them more thoroughly. I like this image--only improvement on it for me would have been some sun on the wings, as my eye loses them in the dark background, with only a bit of light on the face and lower body. Did you get any captures of this on the down beat of the wings? Keep up the great work, very impressive collection of photos. Regards,

Excellent shot, Sean! Great detail in the shadows. Did you have the Active-D-lighting on? Was this shot with the 200-400 f4 zoom? Handheld or tripod? This is one to be proud of!

Yes, Richard, this was shot with the Nikon 200 to 400 and I did have the D-Lighting on as it was getting a little later in the the morning and the sun was creeping up. I was shooting from a tripod with a Wimberley Sidekick. For birds in flight (and other animal action shots) I use the 200-400 a lot handheld (usually while hiking), but since the Venice Rookery is such a great place to anchor down in a good spot and just shoot for a couple of hours the tripod was definitely in order. Unfortunately, I lost about 8 gigs of shots from this one morning at the Rookery as they were fried on my Epson P-3000 viewer (the second time this has happened, only this time I didn't have a second backup source). Needless to say I'm done with Epson and their hard drive products. Luckily this image and a few others were on a second card.

Brad, I did get one in this sequence on the beat. See attached. Not sure which one I prefer.
