It may need a bit more contrast rather than an overall increase in brightness, I think. He seems to be enjoying his position, by the way!

Thanks. I don't see how to give it more contrast; i have to hold detail in the dark sweater and already lost most of the texture/detail in his hair I don't like to see zone 3 DROP to zone 2 . Thanks, maybe i'll try to play with it some. I think he does not know what to think of me.

Meir,

I understand. I was thinking about pushing some midtone towards either end. Surely, that will move the zones. It will not bring better detail to his hair either.

This is surely the result of the high dynamic range of the scene you have been trying to avoid, as I remember.

I agree that your later upload has better contrast but, as you remarked, it is not better compositionally.

I usually fight to keep the skin tone natural which is the midtone (zone 5) for the boy and Zone 6 for light skin. After that the rest has to fall in place somehow. I think that often "light" skin tones are most difficult on the PC. Brad Kim pushes tones down a notch and his shots are beautiful but it is not my preference -for me. (to many weddings I guess). I was lucky with the whites this time.
