Winter presents an exciting variation on those things we can see and photograph. Obviously the white snow and dark wood present extremes of light and dark. For some reason this image is extremely contrasty with the snow becoming chalk white and the dark wood becoming close to black, each extreme losing most texture. This is the kind of image best dealt with in camera raw format so that post processing gives you a full range of information captured by the camera. It is then possible to lower the contrast so as to keep textures showing in the extremes of light and dark. I suggest processing it in 16 mpxl format and only changing it to 8 as the last step. That allows you to adjust tones with all the tools of P/S and not leave gaps in the histogram.
