Awesome woek, Liz. The DOF is great. Love the perfectly lines up pillars. Well seen and captured. Regards, as always, Lawrence.

Thank you, Lawrence and Christoph, for your comments. I can't seem to get the 4's out of the way, so I am trying a few changes.

An excellent architectural image, Liz. The verticals are spot-on and the perspective and p.o.v. is perfect. Beautifully rendered in monochrome, too. All-in-all a fine piece of work, dear friend. Kind regards, Chris

What i really like is the b/w processing. Blacks are truely black and whites are white. The hard processing makes it look like a film work. Like also how you added the tree for the composition, balances the building really nicely. Beautiful b/w piece.

I agree, a nice reward for your efforts. Your use of artistic license to tone the building is valid though the pure B&W of the rest of the shot makes it LOOK manipulated. On first glance I feel the crop is a bit tight though I'd have to see a looser one to be sure. As for ratings, I neither give nor seek them but, on a scale of 1 to 7, 4 is above average and is quite respectable. If pressed for a rating I'd give it a 5, deducting from a perfect score for the reasons I gave. Best, LM.

Tero, I appreciate your thoughts about the processing. I was trying to make it "different" from just a shot of an old building.

Vicente, thank you for noticing the essence of this fine, old establishment.

Len, I appreciate your comment. I know what you mean about the tight crop. It was the best I could do to get the whole building in without getting an alley also. I like your comment about the ratings. I do put a lot of emphasis on them because I am still early in the learning process about photography, and I use rating/comments to give me a general guideline about how I'm doing. My belief is that most of us serious photographers post images we believe are above average work. I work very hard to get better, and average, for me, is not where I want to be. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment.

This is probably my last critique before getting some 'shut-eye'. A beautifully composed image - I love the lines and the depth that I perceive.

Photographers have many choices available to them: Low key, High Key and full tonal range. I tend to prefer mostly the full tonal range from very dark (with details) to the very light and lots of stuff in between. The black in between the pillars is effective because it makes the pillars more dominant. I then start debating about the dark tree trunks - they are part of a natural frame which contrasts with the pillar on the right side and this is OK with me.

The part I find a little distracting is the dark triangular portion (upper right) which on my screen shows as a solid black. Depending on your original, Layer adjustment and vector masks could help you with that spot - if you should find it distracting.

After all that has been said by me, it is a fine image and I am but just one voice and one opinion on an aesthetic matter. You talked about the importance of ratings and you have some that say it is average and others say there is no room for improvement and that will be always the case - something which I experience with my images here at PN.

Ultimately, you have to like it if you are going to hang it on your wall and someone else is going to really like it if they decide they want to purchase the image.

PS One of my images which was published last year had an avg rating of 5.25

Tony, wow, your comment was full of good information. I agree about that top right part. To me, it's the equivalent of white-out, only with black. I will go back and work on it.

I do get upset about ratings without comments. I'm here on PN because I want to learn what I did wrong or right, like what you just said, because I can work on it.

And as I understand it, one of the main purposes of this site is for people to help eachother with learning about photography. I love your comment about selling a work with 5.25. Selling my work? Can't imagine a stranger idea...

Many thanks always, you are one of my great teachers.

I am no teacher but thanks for the comment - Sometimes I start to think I know what constitutes a good image and quickly realize that I don't have a grasp on that for all kinds of reasons. We are on the same journey and if I am a bit presumptuous, due to my more years in photography, I MAY be a little further ahead on that road. I think you have what it takes to critique any images including mine and you know I have room for improvement.

very well taken. beautifully composed, balanced and porocessed. i also like the sober mood of this image. very fitting for classism. please accept 6/6 as p/n will not allow me 7/7.
