I'm a little out of practice. Haven't worked in the journalism field

for a couple of decades. This was one of the few shots that wasn't

spoiled by motion blur. Since the fire scene was mostly hazy smoke,

no flames, all I could manage was a few human interest type shots. My

Nikon D2H is verrry noisy at ISO 6400, no longer competitive with the

D300, D700 or D3(x) era dSLRs.

I like it. A little noisy, but great capture of surprise or concern. I am a member of the local Vol. Fire Company and this caught my attention. I understand the Fireman can't wait to pose while you get your external flash. Great live action capture.

Thanks, Mark.  Been awhile since I looked at these photos - I think I took 'em almost exactly two years ago.  I just remember it was a chilly, damp night like tonight.  I like the photos in this folder because I've seen these fellows around the neighborhood and I think it shows them in a more interesting way than most of my other photos of these guys at work - more of a human interest side.

When I compare 'em with my 20-30 year old b&w PJ photos - mostly Tri-X, often pushed - the noise doesn't bother me.  But compared with the current crop of dSLRs and even some P&S digicams, the D2H just isn't competitive.  Best thing I've found to do is convert to monochrome and it somewhat resembles Delta 3200, which is a very grainy film.

Reminds me, I'm not sure I ever gave copies of these photos to the fire department.  I usually try to burn CDs for 'em when I happen to photograph their activities.  The fire station is right next door and they're really good folks, always helpful and right on the spot when we have emergencies.  My apartment complex is mostly elderly and disabled residents, so we have a higher than average rate of visits from the fire department and paramedics.
