Nightfall over Balance Rock in Arches NP appeared other-worldly on this evening. A 10 second exposure illuminated the steadily darkening scene, the rocks still glowing from sunset, but enhanced with a long exposure. The contrast in cool colors of the snowy peaks and warm rocks made this one of my favorite shots from that evening.

One of the final images during a spectacular sunset in Arches NP. A

20 second exposure was used capture the last light reflexted off the red

rock. I especially liked the play of blues and reds. Comments welcome.

20 seconds? How did that not blow out the background mountains? Or this is an HDR blend? Technical confusion aside, it's a great image, as are the others you've made from this location. The same reasons apply: interesting and beautiful color and color contrast, appealing forms, excellent detail.

Hi John - I checked back on the exposure data and I indeed had looked at a different image. This one was a 10 second exposure, still long but not as long. The scene was quite dim, with glow still coming off the rocks. The 3 stop ND filter prevented the blow out of the mnts, which were dark as well. As you can see from the mnts, not much of shadows as the light by this time was pretty even. Thanks for catching that for me!

What a wonderful place and as always you captured it very well. I really like the mountains in the background, without which this photo would have no balance. Well done!
