Painted Desert - Arches National Park

harrylichtman

Two images were merged to form this pano format. Earlier in my week at Arches, I had positioned myself near The Garden of Eden for a view into the Windows area. Later in the week, fresh snow blanketed the La Sals and I wanted to include Balanced Rock with the new snow. I scouted out this view a day before, then returned as the last rays of sun grazed the red rock. A long zoom compressed the view, adding a bit more emphasis to the snowy peaks. While I isolated some of the formations with single shots, 2 images were needed with the zoom to include the play of light across the desert plain.

One of my final images from a week in the Moab area this past

Thanksgiving. I was blessed with some fresh snow on the La Sal

Mountains. The sun's final rays strike the red rock and storm clouds,

creating a great light show. I especially liked the way the sun

highlighted the textures of the desert that poked above the plains. The

image does appear a bit left-heavy, but I thought there was enough

interest on the right side to include the entire expanse in this version.

Your comments always appreciated.

The pano format works well for this image. Lovely light and interesting clouds. I would prefer a little more separation between Balanced Rock and the background cliffs but that's really pretty minor.

Harry: The image is left heavy but the right side presents the scale of the image. I think the two leading lines, low snow covered ridge and canyon rim ad plenty of balance and interest. And as you mentioned, that's where the flat area highlights are most evident. After a few minutes I found myself looking through or past the two pillars in the front left to the background of the image anyway. Great image worth several looks.
