Yowza! Huge range in this one all held in check nicely. It's a textbook example of a scene for the use of the Daryl Benson Singh Ray filter. Nice bonus effect that the cloud lines funnel to the peaks. Bravo!

This is a real stunner, for all of the obvious reasons! I almost wonder if it might not even be improved with a slight crop up from the bottom to remove the snow-dusted rocks in the FG? It seems that the real focus for the viewer is the lit up middleground, rainbow and sky. Wonderful work, and Happy New Year to You and Yours, my friend. Cheers! Chris

Wonderful contrast in both colour and light with the highlighted mid-ground against the misty mountains and foreboding sky.

Simon, I am a great admirer of your work. However, I do have two suggestions. The foreground rocks seem to be irrelevant and should be cropped out. Secondly. the brown area or the right is too dominant and devoid of interest. If possible, the composition would benefit from moving left to gain a better angle and better perspective. I know it is not always possible to move your location. If it was, you would have probably done it. Last suggestion, just thought of it, straighten the shore line, crop the foreground rocks off, and create a pano format. Simon, thanks for being a great help to others, including myself. Happy new year... Larry Goodman

Hi Larry,

thanks for the suggestions. I understand what you are saying completely but I decided to leave the image uncropped with a less than perfect composition for the following reasons. The light and the rainbow appeared while I was about a quarter of a mile from this spot, the rainbow intercepted the mountain about halfway along the ridge which looked pretty unsatisfying. I decided to take the chance of missing the whole spectacle by running up the ridge to a point where the rainbow formed a symetrical arch over the mountain. I arrived at this position at the end of the ridge gasping for breath with rain poring down and no obvious composition to go for. I could see the rainbow was starting to fade, I managed to get three frames in before it disappeared completely, this was the first one and it is barely visible on the next two. I wanted the furious activity and spontaneity of the capture to be part of the image. Sometimes these things happen so unexpectedly it's just not possible to get everything perfect. The important thing to me is that I managed to catch a very special moment in the best way I possibly could at the time.

This is about as ethereal an image as I can imagine. I've never seen a full rainbow in my life, so first off, that is amazing. But the glowing light in the center just seems to cry out something from above. And in my humble opinion, I like the crop just the way it is. Nice work, Simon, and a very Happy New Year to you!

One of the most fantastic light performances I have seen for a very long time. The golden piece of it right below the rainbow makes the capture even more special. As always, it was a great pleasure to have browsed your portfolio again today. All the best in 2009.

Wonderful shot... your ability to capture the special light in each scene is admirable. One of the few full length rainbows that I've seen... thanks for sharing! Mike
