Composite image using the `Picture Tube' tool in PSP P X2.

The title refers to the disproportionate effect that a tiny change ininitial conditions can have on a system, such as the merging materialsin the coffee cup.

Dave,, Great colors, and very nice composition.. There is only one thing, The stuff in the coffee cup looks scary.. LOL,, I'm not sure I want to drink coffee with you my friend.. I will say it adds lots of color to your image though. I think it would look nice, maybe even make a better shot without the butterfly.. Congrats !!!!

The cup contains the ingredients for a cup of instant coffee with powdered, non-dairy creamer.

Heated water

Instant Coffee - the brown stuff

Instant Creamer - the white stuff

The way in which these ingredients dissolve and combine, without external intervention, is affected by the temperature of the water to a considerable degree. The angle-of-repose of the dry powders when placed on the water surface also has marked effect on the distribution and dissolution of the coffee and creamer.

Each of these variables is sensitive to initial conditions, and some combinations have an inordinately pronounced effect on the mixing process... The Butterfly Effect.

The butterfly on the saucer is a Visual Metaphor for it's namesake effect.

This coffee was delicious when consumed moments after this exposure.
