I thought this a fitting colour scheme for posting on Christmas Day.

Your comments\critiques will be gratefully received. Best, LM.

There is a very subtle but noticeable red hue in the snow shadows, I guess it was really there because of reflections of the intense color of the wheel. Very nice motif, the strong colors against the snow are very effective. And the varnisher was kind enough to chose a green priming coat :-) Excellent photo !

I wish you a very happy and successful New Year !

And a Happy & prosperous New Year to you as well. Most of the red tint to the snow would indeed be caused by the (unnoticed at the time) reflection of the red wheel though I may have inadvertantly added to it by slightly (10%) increasing the red saturation in PS. Since the wheel is probably about 100 years old the green 'primer' you refer to was likely the original colour. Anyway this was too much to simply pass by without investing a few frames on. Best, LM.

Thanks for popping in. Always a pleasure. I have to confess that the original included the whole wheel. I cropped this to eliminate a lot of distracting material that I was too lazy to deal with at the time of exposure. Yah, look around on New Years day to see who's been naughty. Speaking of New Years, have a happy, healthy, & prosperous one. Best, LM

A very attractive colorful composition. Good depiction of effects of harsh effects of time and elements. Well done.

What do you think if you added a little more breathing space on the right?

Thanks for stopping by with your thoughts & suggestions. I offer a slightly altered composition for your consideration. Is this what you had in mind? I included more on the left as well to maintain symmetry. Best in 2009, LM.

Thanks for the response. Yes to me this looks better. But I admit it is more of a personal bias than any science that I like breathing space around the subject.

I sometimes rant about posts which have major elements too close to the edge of the frame but it seems, perhaps, that I fell into the trap myself with this one. "Too" is the part that is indeed subjective. Thanks for your insight, I'll be more careful in the future though don't think I won't offer you a point to critique. :-) Best, LM.

Wonderful composition and colors. I like the second version (also framing there --- the red line in the original is a bit distracting imho). compliments and happy new year. -koushik

Thanks for your two cents worth! So it's more or less unanimous, more breathing room is preferred. Can't say I disagree. Simple is usually better. As for the red line, I was just trying to add an accent which matched the subject colour but it seems you like a more simple presentation. That's OK, it's called 'Artistic License', and everyone is entitled to it. Don't be a stranger. Best, LM.

Somehow I like your first version .had a better punch imo. I Iike the under layers of green color, that tells some history here, I like as well the crop that created a nice composition of white /red half wheel, the full wheel may have decreased the impact.

Best Wishes for 2009.

Thanks for your most welcome visit. You've shown that the acceptable distance from a major element to the frame edge is not scientific but rather subjective. It's good to get different opinions on it if only to solidify your own feelings about it. The decision to crop out the top half of the wheel was a no-brainer for me. The deep red and white snow contrast is well demonstrated without the cropped parts & that's what attracted me in the first place. Stay safe. Best, LM

I like the juxtaposition of this old weather wheel against the soft fresh snow. The faint glow of red reflection on the snow pulls it all together. Eye catching in it's simplicity.

I have to admit that the red reflection in the snow got by me, at least consciously, until Carsten pointed it out. It seems his eye is more practiced than mine. It appears that this old dog has a few more tricks to learn. Thanks for the visit and for your observations. Best, LM.

Thanks for taking the time & for your kind assessment. The contrast of red & white is what caught my attention initially. As for the crop, well, the top half is similar to the bottom half so I decided to keep things simple. I see from your folder that you are no stranger to high quality work. I'll be over to see you soon. Got you bookmarked. Best, LM.
