Send it to Macy's!

I like it a lot. It has energy and there's a story unfolding.

As for the story, I wonder if a slightly faster shutter speed would have caught just a bit more detail of faces in the passing windows, while still capturing the movement of the train. I love the bit of leg on the far right and also wonder if just a little more of his (her?) body would work even better (including the whole body wouldn't be necessary).

Great idea and nice use of the camera.

Thanks Fred, Agree that a faster shutter speed could work well here. I didn't have too much time to experiment with the shot and was lucky that the lady stood very still for this frame.

Happy New Year Fred.

I think the turn of her head, in the direction of the train, and the blur of the train in the same direction makes the image work. To my eye, her figure looks a little soft. I would have tried to remove the foot of the other bystander, either by camera placement or post processing. I think some photographs work very well with simple themes, but any elements outside the theme become major distractions... I am wondering if the white balance is just a little off...

Carey, Thanks for the comment. I agree that the woman is soft, most likely due top the slow shutter speed. I was lucky she stood this still. The white balance is pretty realistic. That is the color of the lighting in the subway station.

True, I think if you changed the white balance here you would lose the realistic feel to it. Great effect, I like the red star, too - compliments the pale green colors of the surroundings (and trousers:) Congrats!

Doug, very good light that creates a monochromatic subdued nuances of color. well diagonaly composed vs. the upright passenger. Her blouse, shopping bag and red stare are completing the whole with dots of color. Well observed.

What makes this for me is the red star on the bag.

I love trying to get shots in stations as well, and this one really stands out.

I know you took the picture in Thailand, but what immediately comes to mind is one of the 'glorious' (maybe I should refer to them as self-congratulatory) communist edifices throughout the old Soviet empire.

Cracking image!

Cheers

Thanks Stanislaw and Pnina,

Rob, I am a little puzzled by you comment and I may partly to blame with my mentioning that I have lived in Thailand.

The image is in a Los Angeles subway station and the bag is a "Macy's" department store bag. One interesting historical fact about Thailand is that they have never been conquered or occupied by any other country. They are more like the reed that bends in the wind instead of breaking. They have allowed other armies to operate from their land but have never given up government and control of their country. I think this is reflective if the kind nature of Thais.

Maybe I have misunderstood what you wrote?

Hi Douglas,

Sorry about the late reply.

My comment certainly didn't have any political intention to it.

With the red star on the bag, it just brought to my mind an image of the old Soviet subway stations in eastern Europe.

Perhaps because I live in Seoul, and am fascinated by North Korea, I have the evils of Communism on the brain at the moment!

And as for Thailand, I just assumed that you took it there! And assumption is the mother of all f**k ups! So sorry about that!

Cheers

No worries Rob. It's an interesting study in how the same thing looks from a different perspective. All the best! Doug

Douglas, this is a superb urban shot, the choice of making it a long shutter image was a superb idea that resulted in quite a plus to a wonderful composition. Congratulations!

Ah...the Macy's star! I recognized it right away...in fact, the star is what drew me into the photo. Very well done with a story unfolding...I bet the woman can't wait to get home with all her goodies and put her feet up! (I hope she at least bought some cute shoes). Thank you for sharing. :)
