Utah's Classic Moonscape

harrylichtman

Utah's classic Delicate Arch seemed to be a better fit as a B&W than color image for this composition. Taken in November, the setting sun doesn't light up the arch as is does with the higher sun, but the slight back-lighting created some rim light which I found attractive. I also liked the way the streaking clouds and highlighted mid-ground mimicked the striations in the sandstone. The snowy La Sals completed the shot. While not completely original, it's a difficult place to put a new spin on a such a well photographed and accessible icon.

Thanks Tim - Another aspect that is obvious to me with a B&W that wasn't readily apparent in the color is the wedge of dark sky at the top left that balances the dark shadow wedges in the mid-ground. Thanks for the look.

Very nice black and white rendition of this scene, Harry. Excellent conversion. The striped clouds do in fact compliment the striped rock.
