Bridging the Gap - Mesa Arch

harrylichtman

I tried to create a dynamic and unique perspective of the iconic Mesa Arch by positioning myself at the lip of the arch to take in the canyon below. 2 vertical images were stitched to encompass the view.

Again the glowing light is just genius here. I might be tempted to level the horizon; it looks like it dips down on the left side a skosh. Beautiful work, my friend; and Happy Holidays to You and Yours! Cheers! Chris

Hi Chris - Thanks for the view. I do see what you mean. The dip on the cliffs MG are a little exaggerated do to the wide angle lens. The other thing that I made note of while there is that the La Sal mnts do not appear straight across the horizon-they appear as they are going downhill as well. Maybe it is an optical illusion-or I need my eyes checked. Have a great Holiday as well!

Great shot Harry, it's neat to see how other photographers capture this icon. I love the composition, like the way you framed the distant mountains with arch and soft glow on horizon with yellow still there. But it appears the underneath of arch isn't lit up like I remember it doing when I shot mine day before you. Did you shoot this just as sun crossed the horizon? Plus it does look like the distant horizon is sloping down.

Hi Eric- I think the sloping horizon is an error, and will be corrected-hopefully soon by the updated version. The La Sals did seem to slope a bit depending on your location in the area. Regarding the glow, I think it may be variable depending on the clouds on the horizon during sunrise. I stopped back later in the week and the glow appeared weaker than on this morning. ANother possibility which I still need to look into, is that I exposed to hold the detail in the very bright glowing area. The orange-red glow was quite intense and I didn't want to loose detail, and as you know the extremes in lighting with this scene is intese. Hope you enjoyed your visit to arch as much as I did-not much privacy-but that is why it is an iconic spot, I guess. I'll be uploading some more images from that morning, and the other morning later in the week.

Regards, and have a great Holiday, Harry
