I guess I almost had the same reaction as Charles - Mine was "whoa - those palm trees must be a digital alteration". so it was off to google to see what I could find out about sea palms and there I saw photos and a description:

"Postelsia, also known as the sea palm (not to be confused with the southern sea palm) or palm seaweed, is a genus of kelp. There is only one species, P.palmaeformis and it is found along the western coast of North America, on rocky shores with constant waves. It is one of the few algae that can survive and remain erect out of the water; in fact it spends most of its life cycle exposed to the air. It is an annual, and edible, though harvesting of the alga is discouraged. Postelsia is a partially protected species in California.

Now back to the photo: great rays of light and an intriguing dichotomy between the waves in the upper portion and the lower portion of the image. All is good and appealing. Well done. 7/6

Excellent exposure, composition and detail, Rick! I really like how you have been able to get the beautiful highlights in the water.

Something to aspire to. The fact that you got the foreground captured so well with the sun behind is amazing, regardless of how it was done. Great detail in waves and plants.

I used to shoot these all the time near Pescadero, CA. But I was never blessed with these kinds of conditions. Awesome light and Perfect choice of shutter speed to show the power of the thrashing sea. Excellent!
