leo burkey 0 Posted November 24, 2008 The moon was on the rise as the sun was setting when I took this image in the Mojave Desert in Joshua National Park. Link to comment
stp 6 Posted November 24, 2008 Leo, this is beautiful, a great combination of rock formations, clouds, and the rising moon. Link to comment

lonebearimages 0 Posted November 26, 2008 I completely agree with all of the earlier comments! Very dramatic; and I love that there is just the barest hint of some detail in the dark region at the base of the photo. Excellent processing! Cheers! Chris Link to comment
iancoxleigh 0 Posted November 27, 2008 The low clouds, the dark sky, and the positioning of the moon all remind me of Ansel's Moonrise shot -- not a bad first impression. ;-) I think this is my absolute favourite of your images from JT. Actually probably my favourite shot here on PN in a while. Link to comment
lonebearimages 0 Posted November 27, 2008 Gotta say that I am pretty much gobsmacked by Ian's allusion to Ansel's "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941." Ian is spot-on 100% correct. Superb work, Leo; now I really know why I like this photograph! Obviously Ian has perused, "Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs"! Cheers! Chris Link to comment
iancoxleigh 0 Posted November 27, 2008 "Obviously Ian has perused, "Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs"!" Actually, I have never seen that book in person. It is on my Christmas wish list and I will probably buy it for myself soon afterwards. But, I have seen an original AA print of it (and about 40 others) in an exhibit here in Toronto at the AGO. It was a very interesting exhibit pairing Adams with Eisenstadt (an odd pairing IMO -- a contrast of style and technique). Actually there were two things that struck me most from that exhibit: 1. All the prints were small. Very small. Many were contact prints and the other ones that were enlargements weren't any bigger than 11x14 or 16x20 (only 1 or 2 that big). 2. There was one shot of Yosemite Valley where Adams had duplicated a patch of forest so as to remove a road form the image -- cloning in the darkroom! Still a stunning exhibit and I am thrilled to have seen original prints of so many of his images. It probably had less of an impact on me than seeing Burtynsky's Manufactured Landscapes in person though -- those really got me into photography in the first place. Link to comment
leo burkey 0 Posted November 27, 2008 I'm "Gobsmacked" as a friend of mine says. Why, because I had posted this image with a statement that I immediately removed as I thought that it might be too pretentious. The statement: "as I released the shutter thoughts of Ansel Adams "Moonrise Hernandez" flashed across my mind. In the processing phase, I also tried to create a similar "feel" to the image, which was difficult because the foreground was in full sun. Wow, I just can't fool the two of you! Thanks for your words of encouragement and having such eagle eyes and keen memories. I will post the original RAW for comparison. Link to comment
