timkeller 0 Posted November 5, 2008 This B&W farm series is impressive, Dick. This one's my favorite, wonderfully detailed and sharp from foreground (great grasses!) to background, even viewed large. All the B&W conversions are beautiful, and here the subject matter is interesting, likeable, and well-composed. I thought this would be the 10-20, the way the point of view looks low when looking to the barn, but then looking at the fenceposts I realize you're at eye height. Skillful and pleasing. rarmstrong 0 Posted November 5, 2008 Thanks, Tim! On Halloween afternoon, while my daughter was out trick-or-treating with friends, I took a drive around our area and down some back roads with my camera. The sun and clouds were good that day. The face of the barn is facing west and the sun was low. The grass had a golden hue. I stood in a drainage ditch to get this perspective. In color, most of these shots were just OK. But, converting them to black and white was fun and I think that the highlights from the low angle of the sun helped to produce the nice contrasty punch that I was able to tweak out of these images. I'm getting the hang of this black and white stuff after some pointers from some of our talented friends on this site. Have a good night! Dick Link to comment
Not Here 93 Posted November 5, 2008 Dick... This is my favorite also. The tones and detail are superb and the composition excellent. Great shot... Mike Link to comment

jbm 0 Posted November 8, 2008 I agree with everything Tim posted. How are you doing the black and white conversion? If you are simply desaturating in PS, there are a bunch of other interesting ways to try monochrome conversion that give different types of highlight detail, contrast, and tonality. Just google "photoshop" and "monochrome conversions." Great shot! Cheers, Jay Link to comment
rarmstrong 0 Posted November 9, 2008 Thanks, Jay! I'm using the monochrome mixer in Aperture 2.1 on my iMac. It's pretty straight forward, but when combined with the adjustments you can achieve with a RAW file you can accomplish quite a bit. Thanks for stopping by! Dick Link to comment
